Phonics!! You should correct your title. Yes, there are some words which appear strange and not exactly following the phonics rules. But there are combinations of letters that act together to make different sounds. One, for instance, is the ph combination which sounds like an f. Once a child knows that ph sounds like an f, it unlocks the key to words like elephant and photograph. Whole language gets it wrong because it has the child guessing at words based upon pictures and other context clues. Any guessing that goes on should be based upon the sounds that the actual letters make. And, if you watched a child learning to read by phonics you would see that sometimes the kids get it a bit wrong and sometimes a child comes upon one of the strange words and with the help of phonics, but the phonics helps them guess the word correct. You could say that phonics is the most important context clue of all. But as you do your article above, phonics gets unfairly bashed and put on a shelf while children are taught to read based upon guessing with no thought for accuracy. Here's a couple of links for you to enjoy, one humorous and one scientific.

Making reading easy and fun is definetily needed more. That's why I look up to authors who take the time to write children books, and get them out there for little kids to keep on learning. Thanks for the tips, I'm going to use them on my little sister :)

Thanks-- my wife and I have raised 9 children; so I am proud to say that finally, I feel well educated. Sometimes, I wish I could do it all over-- but then an empty nest is not a bad thing! Thanks again for the comment.
